When we started Brooklyn Creative League, we set out to create a company that embodied our conviction that we’re all better off when we’re all better off. We’ve spent the past three years building an organization whose economic value was rooted in community, collaboration, and mutual benefit. Now that we’re out of the start-up phase, it’s time to start giving back to the broader community: Beginning in 2012, we will allocate 5% of BCL’s profits to nonprofits and mission-driven investing in the areas of human rights, LGBT rights, direct service, and social investing. We’ve also set aside $2,000 to mach donations from BCL members. Read the announcement letter from BCL members here.

We hired BCL member StoryKeep to produce an audio slideshow about Brooklyn Creative League. StoryKeep did a great job of telling our story and capturing what we’re all about. (For real, people: You should check out StoryKeep’s work. They do an amazing job of helping families, small businesses, and individuals tell the stories that matter most.) Dig it:

The Gallery@BCL is pleased to present recent photographs by Sean Eno. Working with multiple images, Eno’s photographs refract and reflect the industrial and the ethereal, setting buildings, boats, and bridges afloat in a reflecting pool of clouds and sky. The resulting images achieve an almost Taoist balance.
Curated by  Frank Sills and Faith Evans-Sills, TheGallery@BCL is a way for Brooklyn Creative League to showcase the work of local artists, and to make original art more accessible and affordable to all. Grab your homemade pickles and cookies, people, and head on down to BCL on October 27th at 7:00pm. Here’s the drill, you bring:
1. Larder goods you made (those jams, pickles, kimchi, preserves, butters, chutneys you’ve compulsively canned over the summer)
2. A homemade (i.e. wrapped) food unit for trade (think a bag of crackers, batch of outta-this-world cookies, a loaf of bread, dried foods, ummm…whatevs, just so long as you made it)
OR
3. A snack for 20-30 people to share at the swap. It doesn’t have to feed everyone, but cutting larger things up in advance is a good idea.
Remember, there’ll be two separate features of the party on Oct 27, feel free to participate in one or both:
1. SWAPPING goods we made (pickles, loaves of bread, jams, chutneys, biscuits, bags of granola, etc.) All trade items are considered equal (food swap equal rights manifesto!) so please don’t bring anything you deem worth more, etc.
2. SAMPLING goods we made and brought to share at the party

Join us for a conversation on the sustainable food system as a metaphor for our lives. Ana Joanes, director of FRESH, will explore how, as we explore the meaning of the word “sustainability,” we begin to develop a vision of a complex web of life where each element — soil, water, worms, animals, wind, trees, insects, etc — has a place and a role. Joel Salatin explains in FRESH that chicken should be allowed to express their chicken-ness, pig their pig-ness, cow their cow-ness.  And, he adds “when you do that, everything else falls into place.†Following this model also brings a radical perspective on our own lives.  As we come to see ourselves as part of this incredible web, we can realize the power and impact of expressing our individual voice and celebrating our uniqueness.
$5 suggested donation. Doors at 6:30, talk starts promptly at 7:00. Limited seating, please RSVP to Lisa{at]FRESHthemovie.com
